Koumandaria Festival, Limassol
The villages of the Kourris Valley, one of Cyprus' better known wine producing areas, celebrate their most famous tipple, with this festival. An amber-coloured sweet dessert wine made in the Commandaria. It is made from sun-dried grapes of the varieties Xynisteri and Mavro. It represents an ancient wine style documented in Cyprus back to 800 BC and has the distinction of being the world's oldest named wine still in production, with the name Commandaria dating back to the crusades in the 12th century, is now a popular drink with both locals and visitors.
Alassa, Agios Georgios, Doros, Laneia, Monagri and Silikou are the main participating villages which celebrate in the renowned tipple in July, as well as Limassol itself.
