The Folk Art Museum, Limassol, Cyprus

This beautifully preserved old house provides a very interesting collection of Cypriot Folk Art of the last two centuries. Some of the most fascinating objects of the collection are: national costumes, tapestry, embroidery, wooden chests, waistcoats, men’s jackets, necklaces, a variety of light clothes, town costumes, country tools etc.

The museum was established in 1985. More than 500 exhibits are housed in its six rooms. The museum was awarded the Europa Nostra prize, in 1989. Here, the visitor can study Cypriot culture through the hand-made exhibits

Authentic Cypriot handicrafts are also offered for sale.

The Limassol District Archaeological Museum

The museum was founded in 1948 and exhibits some very interesting artifacts, dating from the Neolithic Age to the Roman Period. There are three main rooms in the museum which contain a number of objects which portray Cyprus’ history.

The first room exhibits tools and pottery from 3000 B.C. to 1300 A.D, from archaeological sites such as Amathus and Kourion, as well as other areas in Limassol. The second room exhibits jewellery and sculptures from 1700 B.C. It also holds Roman coins and even early razor blades. The third room exhibits some of the most significant findings which are mostly from the ancient site of Amathus and includes the statue of Artemis, along with other remains depicting ancient icons.



Through the exhibited material the visitors can follow the development of civilisation in the island from the 9th millennium to the end of antiquity (Late Roman period).

Limassol Municipal Art Gallery

The Limassol Municipal Art Gallery displays paintings done by some of the most talented and renowned artists from Cyprus. During the winter months the gallery is open between 8.30am till 1.30pm and after siesta, 3pm till 5.30pm. However, in the summer months, due to the excessive heat, the museum only opens at 4pm till 6.30pm.

The Carob Museum, Lemesos, Cyprus

The picturesque village of Anogyra is the only village where the tradition of Pastelli (carob, honey and sesame pie) making is still practised. The seeds of the carob bean, a tree seen over many areas of the island, are so consistent in weight, shape and size, that they were used to weigh gold – hence the word ‘carat.’

The museum traces the history of the carob tree and the uses to which this unusual looking bean pod is put. Many families in the village are still involved in this cottage industry. There is an annual Pastelli festival in September. The Museum also portrays the story of Cyprus carobs, their nutritional value and the owners are keen to suggest alternative uses of the carob fruit, especially as a substitute to cocoa and sugar based sweets. An unusual and interesting visit.

CYPRUS MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY

Part of the The Photos Photiades Foundation's activities was the creation of the Cyprus Museum of Natural History in 1996; this was the first of a series of beneficial projects offered to the public.

The Museum operates in an especially designed building complex situated in the lovely gardens of the CARLSBERG Brewery, at a short distance from Nicosia. It is open to the public and free of charge. It is a remarkable, fully organized museum, of European standard, which contributes to the ample enlightenment of the public, on the flora, fauna and geology of Cyprus. The visitor can enjoy there a picturesque impression of Nature as well as a board cross-section of it.

The Museum's collection includes about 2500 exhibits. The majority of the collection is made of stuffed mammals, birds, fish, reptiles and insects as well as rocks, minerals, semiprecious stones, shells, fossils etc.


A visit to the Cyprus Museum of Natural History may breathe a deeper love and interest in the study of Nature into the visitor, thus contributing to the collective effort to protect the environment.

The Museum is a history that has begun and is bound to keep on going. It never stops to be enriched and grow.
